International Coach Federation (ICF) defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.
NLP is an acronym for Neuro (Brain) Linguistic (Language) Programming.
NLP helps us understand how the language of our mind creates and runs the patterns we have in life. Once we have this understanding, we can apply a variety of NLP processes to enhance, change or alter our patterns of thought, behaviour and emotion. (Dr Heidi Heron, NLP Worldwide 2010).
When we understand how our mind works and how we do what we do… in life, we can change our thinking and in doing so, change our life.
NLP works with the unconscious mind. Our conscious (thinking) mind is often quite noisy, constantly questioning why?why?why?. Our unconscious mind consists of the processes which occur automatically, those memories, beliefs and patterns we have stored over time. We are often not aware that we bring our unconscious mind and all of these beliefs into various situations in our life.
NLP also subscribes to the existence of a higher consciousness, the acknowledgement that we are a part of something bigger than ourselves. Some people refer to this concept as the Universe, others call it God – whatever label works for you…is perfect.
NLP is such a versatile tool. It can be used to:
- change unwanted or limiting beliefs;
- reduce or remove fears, phobias or unwanted patterns of behaviour or habits;
- enhance and improve performance in areas such as public speaking, leadership, study and even sport;
- increase confidence, motivation, courage, resilience, clarity of thought;
- improve relationships, communication, negotiation and conflict resolution;
- diffuse triggers and responses to situations; and
- reduce or remove unhelpful behaviours like procrastination, anger, resentment, sadness, feeling unworthy.
Using NLP techniques can also assist with increasing team performance and improving relationships, enhancing leadership effectiveness, presentation & communication skills.
As an NLP coach, I work with you to understand your current state and define where you would like to be (a different feeling, outcome or goal). I will then help you identify any interferences that are limiting you from achieving your goal or acquiring that desired state. I will empower you to uncover resources that already exist within you, as well as identify any resources that you will need to achieve your desired outcome.
Traditional counselling methods often recall and talk about events from our past. NLP focuses more on where you want to be (your desired state or goal – the future) and looks to identify and change limiting beliefs in order to change behaviours and responses to achieve the outcome you are seeking.
Because NLP does not focus on the details of any traumatic event, many clients report that making changes with NLP is significantly less traumatic than traditional methods and doesn’t cause them the same levels of anxiety.
A typical NLP coaching session with me is likely to run around 90 mins for the very first session. Subsequent sessions can run anywhere from 30 mins to an hour. During the sessions, I will ask lots of questions and I will take notes.
If we are going to undertake a specific process, I will explain the process to you, and how you will know the process has been effective. Some NLP processes will start with asking you to close your eyes. This is purely to assist with focus and visualisation. You may feel more comfortable just looking down towards your hands in your lap and that is completely ok.
You are aware and in control during your NLP sessions and you are not under any spell or hypnotic trance, though many clients report feeling intensely relaxed during and after many NLP processes.
